Garmin has recently announced the STC (Supplemental Type Certification) H version of its popular G500 “Glass Panel” retrofit series for the R44 Helicopter. The G500H is nearly identical to the Garmin’s fixed wing offerings, the difference between the models are found in the Helicopter only applications that are designed specifically for Rotary Wing Aircraft. Items like HSVT (Helicopter Synthetic Vision Technology), which is specially adapted to the needs of helicopter operators. Garmin’s HSVT brings a powerful graphical perspective to the G500H.
Adding a GPS/NAV/Comm solution allows you the option to activate HTAWS (Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning System) navigator, which is installed and interfaced to the G500H. Also, certified “forward looking” terrain avoidance (FLTA) capability is available in HTAWS which predicts in advance where potential hazards may exist. A HTAWS warning received from the GNS 430W or 530W Series navigator will be displayed as an annunciation to the left and aligned with the top of the Altitude Tape on the G500H PFD. Between the HSVT and HTAWS you get increased situational awareness and minimize the chance for collision making each flight safer.
Another great reason to consider installing a G500H is the ongoing maintenance cost. Virtually eliminate the need for Avionics by replacing old analogue and Gyro driven gages and replace them with true digital components. Installing a G500H allows you to forgo the repetitious need to recalibrate your equipment. In addition to that consider the two year warranty and the ability to extend that out another 3 years. This gives you virtually 5 years of worry free flying and can cut operational costs considerably allowing the Garmin G500H retrofit to pay for itself.
