Traditional aircraft cabin lighting systems use cold cathode lighting elements, similar to those found in neon signs. These systems suffer from a variety of problems including poor reliability, durability, and potential safety hazards. The fragile tubes are easily broken. Additionally, the high voltage inverters and the electrical discharge within the cold cathode tubes generate significant electrical noise which may interfere with other aircraft systems.
